For my personal calendar, I have #Radicale 3.4.1 installed on a #Debian VPS. It works great, accessing it from #Thunderbird, or the "Fossify Calendar" (from #FDroid) in #Android. I can read and write events from both clients.

I was gifted an iPad, and the default Calendar app lets me have read-only access (only!) to Radicale. When it comes to writing events, that lofty privilege is reserved for iCloud Calendars only, not those riff-raff Calendars that use CalDAV.

Edit: I eventually sorted it out.

I opened a Github "Discussion" thread (for Radicale) on this:
github.com/Kozea/Radicale/disc

I guess the moral of this story is: Thunderbird, and Fossify Calendar, thanks for being sane! Also, kudos to #Davx5, which I also rely upon a lot in Android, for my CardDAV contacts to work properly - also stored in Radicale.

PS: #Apple is really hoity-toity. I would never choose into buying an Apple device myself, ever again. #DataSovereignty is next to impossible. #OpenSource

The announcement of “Thundermail” (I.e. Thunderbird Pro) reads more like envy than a valid justification for monetisation.

Sure, Thunderbird might remain free, but it sows doubts as to whether any meaningful new feature will be added to it.

Why anyone would believe that they will intentionally hamper their own monetisation efforts for goodwill at this point, is frankly beyond me.

The enshitification of software continues…

Weet iemand raad? #linux

The #ThunderBird project is launching pro services to help fund development;

"It is our goal to eventually have a similar offering so that a 100% open source, freedom-respecting alternative ecosystem is available for those who want it. We don’t even care if you use our services with Thunderbird apps, go use them with any mail client. No lock-in, no restrictions – all open standards. That is freedom."

@ryanleesipes can you raise a serious proposal with the board towards changing the legal name, even something simple like Thunderbird Technologies, like whatever.

Once Mozilla and Firefox were an asset to be associated with, I fear that Firefox and Mozilla are both very much tanking in 2025 with their decision to start selling out on user data.

I’ve always loved Firefox and been a strong advocate but the recent changes cut deep, we all know too well the odor that enshitification gives off when companies start to sell out on their users.
