"I think back in the caveman days, our ancestors would huddle around the fire at night and the wolves would be howling in the dark, just beyond the light. And one person would start talking and he would tell a story so we wouldn't be so scared in the dark." - Genius (2016)

Any suggestions of good and affordable ‘pay as you go’ alternatives to MailGun for transactional email?

Server rental vs buying and paying collocation

I just spent some time looking at server buying+collocation vs rental for a server with an 8c/16t CPU, 128 RAM and 2x1TB NVMe.

Rental: €120/month
Buy: ~€3000 + €50/month collocation.

Cost after 5 year:
Rental: €7200
Buy+Collocation: €6000
If asking for credit to pay the server over 5 years: €7500

So, only profitable with cash at hand or if you use the server for more than 5 years (obviously doable but hard to make 5 year decisions in tech).

After you generate the csv go to 'Account->Import and export->Import' and upload the csv. That will follow everyone from the Trunk categories you chosen.

The script source is here: github.com/hugogameiro/trunk-t

Hope it helps getting you started and thanks to @kensanata @Mayana @amolith @carbontwelve and everyone that makes Trunk possible.

If you have just installed Mastodon and don't know where to start to find people to follow a good idea is to try and check other users follows and one by one try to see if you find someone to follow.

Alternatively you can go to communitywiki.org/trunk and do the same on the categories that interest you.

If you are lazy and don't want to look up one by one, I created a little script to generate a csv from Trunk categories: hugo.gameiro.pt/trunk-to-csv/ that you can then import in Mastodon.

I activated App Privacy Report on iOS a couple of hours ago.

I checked it now and this app (Forza Football) that I opened twice since then has send request to 60 different domains.

Damn, I spent 6 hours writing this post masto.host/access-to-backups/

Looking at it, doesn't feel like 6 hours of work but I tracked it :)

"A person with no regrets is simply leading an unexamined life. Personally I try to look at our trespasses not as sins but as sufferings — that we have at our core an essential goodness, but that over time this goodness is loaded up with layers of suffering that lead ultimately to all manner of fucked-up behaviour." - theredhandfiles.com/i-just-can

Highly recommend obsidian.md/ for note taking, brain dumps, writing, second brain, code snippet storage, personal diary and so on.

The local storage system in markdown is the right solution for something so personal and one would never guess how simple the storage is just by using the app interface.

The more I use it the more I love it.

So, my conclusion is: on average for every hour I spend "working" 20 minutes are lost. From breaks, phone calls, random searches I do online, etc.

So, on an 8 hour work day, just around 5 are actually productive.

Today I am sitting on my desk with a pen and a notepad next to me and writing down everything I do and the time it takes me, so I can understand why I keep reaching the end of the day and not move forward with what I had planned for the day.

I have been testing both Pop!_OS for the first time and I like it a lot.

Dress for success, they say. But lately I noticed that my best work has been done while wearing my pyjamas.

So, either "they" are wrong or in my case pyjamas might be my success clothes :)

"The students who exerted more self-control were not more successful in accomplishing their goals. It was the students who experienced fewer temptations overall who were more successful when the researchers checked back in at the end of the semester. What’s more, the people who exercised more effortful self-control also reported feeling more depleted. So not only were they not meeting their goals, they were also exhausted from trying." - vox.com/science-and-health/201

…It’s also victim blaming to tell everyday people they’re at fault for using one of the two main tech platforms instead of an (as of yet inaccessible) alternative. (I have two Pinephones and my room overflows open hardware. No, I don’t blame you for using an iPhone or an Android device. You’re the victim here.)

Blame the actual culprits: clueless legislators/policymakers who allow these monopolies to continue and fail to protect our human rights. Blame Big Tech and those who enable it…
