I have an account with blockchain.com that I don't use.
Today, I got an email from them saying they were doing a XLM (a crypto currency) airdrop (free tokens) that I needed to finish my identity verification to receive.
So, as all my details were already there, all I needed to do was send them a selfie.
It was the first time in my life someone paid me $25 for a picture of my face 😂
Obviously this is a marketing stunt but $25 for just sending them a picture of my face was pretty cool :)
@hugo That's a pretty unique marketing stunt, and it worked! That deserves some kudos 🎉
@hugo They are doing a $125,000,000 give away. Not sure if they give $25 to anyone who joins, still is pretty much half a days work for most people in Portugal. It's almost 5 months of a Personal Plan on Masto.host :P
@hugo What! I'm assuming that's the valuation of the currency, rather than conversion the other way?
@hugo yep, probably. But I exchanged it to Bitcoin and moved it to another wallet, I could just take it out to my bank account right now and I would get the $25. That's real enough for me :)
@hugo and now they can recognise you in all online pictures, cameras, CCTV etc. They can fake identity checks and steal some of your IDs. For that, $25 was dirt cheap
@rigo they already had my pictured ID that I sent them to do a transaction I needed back in the day. So, they already could track me and do all sorts if they wanted to :)
@hugo It only cost $25 for you to connect your face to your bitcoin wallet? Are you aware of bitcoin's privacy options?
@BitcoinBelle they already had my ID from back in the day on a transaction I had to do long time ago, so they already had a photo ID and my full details.
Still, I don't use them and moved the money over to Bitmex to help fund my bots :)
I don't have a lot of money in crypto, so I never felt the need for a cold/hardware wallet. Is that what you were suggesting? I am always eager to learn.
@hugo @BitcoinBelle I dunno about all the privacy stuff,i just find don't like that senseless energy waste that crypto has become. There address uses for this kind of stuff though so I'm careful not to outright attack crypto and blockchain.
So I have a question instead. Why do you use blockchain? Anything specific you can't do without it?
@zladuric Well, in my case I have some people that pay me in crypto but it was the technology that first got me looking into blockchain.
What can't I do without blockchain? Send money instantly to any part of the world for free. That is the first thing that comes to mind.
Plus buy and sell cryptokitties :P how can someone live without cryptokitties 😂
