re: Wanted: POC consultants for sci-fi story
Pinning this to my profile, as this is going to be ongoing for months. To clarify a bit, I am looking for input from POC from the US and Europe and also from folks outside of those regions/cultures. I am hoping to get input from a lot of different folks. You don't have to be an expert or sci-fi enthusiast to contribute.
Thinking about a thing I saw a while ago on how people get radicalized into fascism that described it really well using a circle with layers like an onion with dedicated nazis and other white nationalists at the core and at each layer the people think they’re the true believers and that it’s extremists in the layers closer to the core and fools who don’t know the truth in the layers farther out
Can't really say I've knowingly patronized any Disney outlets in the last 10-15 years. But knowing that they're greedy and selfish enough to reopen their fucking theme park right now makes me feel affirmed for that. 🖕
I know about Marvel. Who else do I need to avoid completely to make sure I'm not tossing any pennies at the Monsanto of entertainment?
You don't always have to be super detailed in your captions. When you're captioning images (which you generally should), ask yourself what your intention is. If you're posting a picture of, I don't know, a cat because you're making a pun involving cats, it's totally sufficient to write "a cat" because anything else would distract from the point. But let's say you're showing your followers a specific cat that you befriended on your way home, in that case maybe describe it! Is it a tabby or a tuxedo? Longhair or shorthair? What colour are the cats eyes? Long whiskers? Just give it a minute. Captioning can be fun and it's good mindfulness practice because it makes you think about what you're looking at.
hi posting the powderpaint EP again so i can pin it on my profile
but if you havent listened to it yet,,,,,,,, go on!!!
@Are0h hi! Can I follow you?
#CatStoriesClub is pretty self-explanatory, but more loose "talk about what you're reading" rather than reading specific books together
#FanficFriday *kind of* counts I think. I'm counting it.
I might start a comics one but I'm bad at starting things so who knows.
You can add a text description to images on most clients.
Here's a guide on how to write description (or 'alt text'): https://www2.le.ac.uk/webcentre/plone/build/basics/add-images/alt-text
thoughts on image descriptions
- some people need them to get any value out of your image
- some people find them extremely helpful to provide context for the subject/content/point you're making
- it's an opportunity to be creative, you can have fun with them while also being informative
- there's been an odd exception, but in general i don't boost images without descriptions, and i know i'm not the only person with that policy
in summation: use image descriptions
@flowless2 fediverse police arriving in an open source jalopy. it has no siren. instead they are simply posting "wee woo wee woo" over and over.
"To let things slide for the sake of friendship when a person has clearly gone wrong, and refrain from principled argument because he is an old acquaintance, a fellow townsman, a close friend, a loved one, an old colleague or old subordinate. Or to touch on the matter lightly instead of going into it thoroughly, so as to keep on good terms. The result is that both the organization and the individual are harmed. This is one type of liberalism."
