How was your Degoogling, ? What tools and/or services did you use to replace the ones from Google?
So far, I'm replacing Gmail with Infomaniak.com free email service. This made me change the associated email address in a lot of services to the new one. There are still a few services unchanged, specially state stuff, but I'll make it eventually.
For web searches, I'm using @StartpageSearch instead of Google.
I haven't found a decent replacement for Photos so far :(

@ru the software looks nice! But I can't afford the costs of selfhosting or subscribing to a managed hosting service :(

Tb tens o mail do Vivaldi.

O resto n vais conseguir resolver.

@brunomiguel interessa-te? Negoceia c o tipo, transfiro-te o valor q negociares, n como um favor mas pq n é justo q fiques parado pelas circunstâncias. Ok?

@josegustavomartins agradeço-te sinceramente do fundo do coração!

✅ De-googled android phone
✅ Self-hosted email running Mailu stack
✅ Searx search instance (backend uses Brave search)
✅ Nextcloud for photo & video auto backup

Will give @StartpageSearch a try, thanks!

@ninja my Nokia X5 phone doesn't seem to have a degoogled ROM :(
Selfhosting is out of the table because I can't afford it right now: I'm on a meager sick leave and I already make a tremendous effort to pay for my meds and the therapy :(

You might want to give a go at Woogle. You can even run it locally and get Google Search results without the tracking. It's a pretty good software, IMO

@brunomiguel

Stay strong! That's a very challenging medical condition :ablobsweats:

I've heard Oracle Cloud has "always free" VM. Will try Woogle as well :agooglethumbsup:

@ninja thank you! :)
I wasn't aware Oracle Cloud had a free VM tier. I need to check it

@brunomiguel For email, I am currently using Fastmail, it has been rock solid but it's paid.

For search it's a bit tricky, for local search and language/country specific searches in Portugal I haven't found a single replacement that I can reliably count on without falling back to Google.

Also don't know of a free alternative to Photos. But if you want a "hackish" solution and have an old computer (let me know if you don't) you can always host Nextcloud/Owncloud from home or something.

@hugo @brunomiguel

In the search bit, give a try to Brave Search. Isn't Google, but, also, is not a Bing. 🤣
search.brave.com/

@brunomiguel @hugo @StartpageSearch

They are all the same, really.
Is Bing results as a base, what is different is how they present the results and crawl the web to extend that.

StartpageSearch had some privacy issues in the past that made me retract a little bit.

It depends also from the usage from one person to another.
I like DuckDuckGo for image search, but hate it for web search for instance.

@DJPRMF @hugo @StartpageSearch I wasn't aware of those privacy issues with Startpage. Could you provide a link, please?
uBlock Origin does display a few blocked items, and AdGuardHome may be blocking some too. I may go with Whoogle again :thinkingcat:

@DJPRMF @brunomiguel I tried Brave Search and was honestly impressed but for things that I search regularly in Portuguese or about local information, it doesn't work.

But it's impressive that they can do a decent search engine without using Bing.

@hugo@masto.pt @brunomiguel@masto.pt if you are looking for a replacement for fast mail look in to mailinabox I am using it for several years now and don't want anything els anymore for my email

@hugo give Whoogle a test for language/country specific searches. It acts like a proxy to Google Search, removing the tracking but giving you Google Search results. You can even run it on your computer

@hugo I have a very hold single-core desktop with a tremendously slow disk, but I don't have a monitor for it and the motherboard battery is dead, so it never saves the time if power fails (which happened, screwing me ^^')

@brunomiguel I have a very old laptop that works (not sure how the battery is). I have installed Linux on it recently for a test and it still works. If you ever need something to hack, I can give it to you.

@hugo I ran Whoogle on my laptop for almost a year, but since I don't have a powerful laptop, I decided to stop using it to save a few cpu cycles and went with Startpage

@hugo @brunomiguel Fastmail user here as well. As u said it’s “paid”, but I’ve used it for years now, also as you said, “rock solid”, preferable UI, nice feature set (they added “masked” addresses). New Zealand based, I believe. I can’t leave it, despite trying others, protonmail, tutanota, etc. I still keep Thunderbird too, of course.

@donhawkins @hugo I don't doubt it's solid. The issue, for me, is being paid. I have some special circumstances: I have a few chronic health issues and I've been more than a year on paid sick leave due to fibromyalgia, receiving less than €250. Half of that is for a therapy that gives me a few days - at best - of pain relief; the other half is for meds and it's not enough for the entire month. So, I can't go with paid services. If I could, Fastmail, Mailbox.org or Migadu would be my mail service

@brunomiguel everything selfhosted.... for search i use a selfhosted #searx instance

@r3pek can you provide a list of services that are you running as alternative? @brunomiguel
